The Centre for Forest Research (CEF in French) is a university-based research centre that draws together scientific expertise in forestry from across the province of Quebec. This centre brings together 57 scientists from 11 Quebec universities (UQAM, UQAT ,Concordia, McGill, UQAC, UQO, UQAR, TELUQ, University of Montreal, University of Sherbrooke and Laval University), and nearly 40 associate scientists, who are distributed among universities and various governmental institutions within Quebec, throughout Canada and internationally. With the inclusion of 400-plus doctoral and master’s students, CEF is the largest forest ecology research group in Canada and one of the most important in the world. The CFR research teams at Université de Québec a Montreal (UQAM) and Université de Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) have catalysed CEF from its birth and are the two institutions representing the network within NEWFORESTS. However, CEF expertise from other research groups will be integrated into the proposal through the collaboration between research teams at UQAT and UQAM. In response to challenges faced by forests in a context of rapid environmental changes, the scientific mission of CEF is to better understand the functioning and dynamics of forest ecosystems, the interactions between their components, as well as their distinctive biology, within a perspective that reconciles conservation of biodiversity with increasing basic commercial productivity.
